How would you rate your career wellbeing?

A client who had received yet another ‘exceeds expectations’ rating on his performance review, reflecting on his values, said:

“You know what? There are other things I want to exceed at”.

He’d prefer to exceed at being a great dad who was fully present with his young children, not just there for the ‘rush hours’ (getting everyone out of the house in the morning, or into bed at night). To exceed at his relationships, with his wife and his wider family and friends. At keeping himself healthy. The list went on.

This made my day. Strange as it might sound coming from a career coach, but it’s the reason I do what I do.

For me, career coaching isn’t about helping people to do more, be more, mindlessly taking on one promotion after the other. It’s about helping people be deliberate about career choices, aware of what will give them satisfying work as well as a sustainable, enjoyable lifestyle.

There is no greater satisfaction for me than seeing someone who was exhausted, operating on autopilot, burning themselves out at work, get to a point where they can give themselves permission to put their wellbeing first.

It’s human nature to want to achieve, have status, excel at what you do and there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. But too often it comes at the expense of a healthy life. Followed by regrets.

Career wellbeing is about knowing what good looks like for you in all areas of your life, so you can be mindful and aware or your decisions. Not letting your subconscious, out dated beliefs, ‘shoulds’ and fears rule your actions.
